Face Mask Skincare Routine
If you feel like your face mask is causing skin irritation and breakouts, you’re not alone. Since not wearing a mask isn’t an option for most and we’ll be wearing them for the foreseeable future, both prevention and the right skincare routine are key to maintaining healthy skin while wearing a face mask.
Masks can cause friction and irritation across your nasal bridge, behind your ears and around your chin area. Pre-existing skin conditions like acne, rosacea, dermatitis and psoriasis can also be aggravated by the friction of the mask rubbing against your skin as well as from heat and moisture from your breath and sweat.
What’s the best way to prevent mask related skin irritation?
First things first, it’s important to clean reusable masks daily, or wear a new one each day if you’ve opted for disposable masks.
Next up, it’s important to maintain a consistent skincare routine.
- Double cleanse. While we always recommend double cleansing at night, it’s now more important than ever. A gentle cleanser, such as our Daily Cleanser, is ideal as it won’t strip your skin of moisture, has hydrating properties and uses lactic acid to remove dead skin cells. It’s also antibacterial, which creates an added layer of protection.
- Avoid wearing makeup. Let’s face it, no one will see your beautifully done face under your mask anyways and it can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. If you need to wear makeup, we’d recommend opting for something mineral based and lightweight like our Mineral Sheer Tint, and only apply it to the exposed areas of your face.
- Keep it simple. For those who have pre-existing skin conditions, wearing a mask can potentially exacerbate the condition. Keep your routine simple and try not to introduce new products during this time.
- Hydration is key. Making sure your skin is properly hydrated is crucial. Look for products that contain Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide (B3) and B5, we’d recommend our Hyaluronic B5 Serum. Leave the rich moisturisers for night use only.
Sunscreen is a vital part of your skincare routine and now is no different. Apply SPF50 to exposed areas and reapply as needed.
Breakouts and Irritation
If you’re experiencing breakouts, don’t skip exfoliation. Opt for something gentle, like our Facial Scrub, and use it once a week. Ensure you’re not using anything too harsh as it may further disrupt the skin barrier.
If you’re experiencing irritation and redness, reduce your use of retinol and exfoliants. Shift your focus to anti-inflammatory ingredients like Niacinamide (B3) and Hyaluronic Acid.
Raw and extremely irritated skin may need prescription ointments to help heal the skin. We recommend you with consult your GP or dermatologist especially if a new rash appears, or if the current skin condition changes appearance or is not responding to treatment.
